Constant Vigilance!Grasslands National Park in southern Saskatchewan is a true wilderness, boasting almost 1000km² of rolling native prairie. Such a unique landscape deserves a watchful guardian, and fortunately the park is home to huge colonies of black-tailed prairie dogs. You can always count on them to spot mischief before it gets out of hand (and scurry back to their burrows before it gets too close). Black-tailed prairie dogs are highly social animals, living in small groups of 4-5 adults plus their young. Members of a group will bond with each other by nuzzling and kissing, and they have a varied vocabulary. On a walk across the park, you can hear their distinct whistles and barks as they call to each other across the prairies. A delight to watch.
